Rockin' Grandma

99 year old

Welcome to my Rockin Grandma’s tumblr site. My grandma, Nonna Evelyn Ricciuti is my hero.  She is 99 years old and still going strong. For the past few years I have been shooting video of her cooking in the kitchen. If you click on the photo you will see a video if her pumping iron at the gym. Yes, you read it right, she goes to the gym twice a week.
I grew up in my grandma’s kitchen. Going home to me means going to her kitchen. The familiar smells, tastes, all part of home. Whenever you come to grandma’s house expect to be fed.  One of the many ways of showing you her love is by feeding you. Mounds of food come piling out of the refrigerator, from eggplant parmagnio to simple bread and cheese.
When my brother and I were younger we would beg her for home made pasta. Only years later did she reveal that she does not even like pasta. Nope, she prefers soup.  Any kind of soup. But she would give into my brother and I, spending hours making home made pasta. I did not even begin to realize how lucky I was.
The video of her working out recently won the APA (American Photographic Artists) 2012 Short Video “Rockin It” People’s Choice Award. She commented on the fact that a number of people said she was such an inspiration. Her comment to me was that she just lives her life, so she does not know why she is an inspiration….
My answer to that is this, she embodies what most of us hope to be. She is gracious to everyone around her and listens with a great deal of patience. She has a thirst for knowledge and is grateful to learn something new everyday. And she is a warm and loving person.
I can’t imagine how different my life would have been without my grandmother. She has been the rock in my life. My role model of what I would like to become as move through life. I hope that this blog will inspire those who read it. My intention is to post some words of wisdom from her at least once a week as well as some of the videos that I have put together of her in the kitchen.
